Marieke van Hal is an art historian and Head of Research at Manifesta Foundation in Amsterdam. She worked as a fundraiser for documenta 14 “Learning from Athens” (2016-2017) and was founding and executive Director of Biennial Foundation (2009-2015) for which she initiated and directed World Biennial Forum I and II, organized in Gwangju (2012) and São Paulo (2014). From 2001 to 2006 she was General Coordinator at Manifesta Foundation, in charge of the development and production of three editions of the European Nomadic Biennial. In 2007 she was Director of the first Athens Biennial Destroy Athens, where she initiated the EBN – European Biennial Network. With Elena Filipovic and Solveig Øvstebø, Marieke van Hal organized the Bergen Biennial Conference (Bergen Kunsthall, September 2009), and co-edited The Biennial Reader (Hatje Cantz, 2010) the first anthology on large-scale perennial exhibitions of contemporary art. Van Hal is a MPhil research graduate in Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art in London (2011). She served as member of jury for the curatorial selection of the 9th Gwangju Biennial (2012), the 4th and 5th Thessaloniki Biennale (2013, 2015) and the Montréal Biennale (2016). She was a board member of The Bergen Assembly (2011-2015) and Vice President of the IBA- International Biennial Association (2014-2016).
